Description
Hi, I’m Derek Terrell, PMHNP-BC and a graduate of Regis College with a Master’s in Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing. I specialize in diagnosing and treating mental health conditions affecting adults and adolescents. My special interests include working with professionals, minority groups, LGBTQ+ individuals, those who feel “othered,” and providing second opinions. I use a warm and empathic approach to create collaborative partnerships with my patients so that psychiatric concerns can be addressed from a shared perspective. I place a strong emphasis on psychoeducation by helping patients understand their diagnoses and management options, enabling them to make informed decisions about their health. My practice is rooted in a blend of supportive, client-centered, and insight-oriented therapy, ensuring a holistic approach tailored to your individual needs. Our appointments will never feel rushed. I strive to work with clients to explore their emotions, understand their experiences, and develop practical strategies for managing their mental health needs. During your intake, I will work with you to develop a comprehensive treatment plan. If medication is started, you can always expect to understand the reason it was prescribed and potential side effects. In therapy sessions, you can expect to feel validated and supported while gaining tools and strategies to put into action between visits. I specialize in treating ADHD, anxiety, depression, PTSD, and substance use disorders. I prefer to keep my clients engaged with treatment by regularly checking in, assigning therapeutic homework, and setting clear and realistic expectations so they know exactly how I make recommendations and what they can expect from medications and/or therapy. With over 25 years in psychiatry, I have worked in various settings including inpatient (acute/chronic), emergency, detox, IOP/PHP, outpatient, and substance use. I specialize in treating adults, teens, and families in crisis.
